Boating Information

  • FREE BOAT USE: Boats are first come first serve; however, please be mindful of your time on the boat if others are waiting.
  • PUBLIC ACCESS: Moose Lake has a public access 1 mile from The Black Lantern. Because there is limited space for turning around, no RVs are allowed at the public access. Please note that there are private residences at the end of 320th Street. Please do not drive down private driveways to turn around.

Helpful packing reminders

Please be sure to bring bug spray, cameras, water bottles, sun glasses, matches, garbage bags, flash light and batteries, charcoal, and proof of insurance for any motorized vehicle you bring to The Black Lantern.

  • BAGLEY: Fireside Grill & Patio (9 mi): Casual - fine dining restaurant with full lounge area and outside seating, specializing in seafood, steaks and unique entrées. Hwy 2 West. (218) 694-2012.
  • BEMIDJI: The Cabin Coffeehouse & Café (24 mi) Healthy, homemade food, salads, sandwhiches and wraps. Vegan and other special diets accomodated. 214 3rd Street NW. (218) 444-2899.

Swimming Beach

  • BAGLEY: (8mi) Head West on Hwy 2. Go right at the stop light in Bagley, city park on your left.
  • ITASCA: (15mi) Head South on County Rd 2 until you enter Itasca.

Things To Do

Stargaze, watch the sunset off the dock, try to spot big northerns and turtles from a kayak, pick a bouquet of wild flowers, explore the recreational trails, go fishing, pick wild raspberries, have a campfire, watch a storm roll in, put up a hammock, read a book, bring the kids hunting for treasures, BBQ, look for the state flower—the Lady Slipper (do NOT pick them), tell scary stories, frisbee, picnic, gamble at Shooting Star casino, croquet, sleep under the stars, snowmobile, ice fish, build an igloo or fort, build a snowman, try to spot wild animals, snoeshoe, explore the neighboring public lands, kayak a section of the Mississippi (day trip), pick strawberries at Ter-Lee Gardens, go to the Mississippi Headwaters or Lake Itasca (day trip), have a cold one at the local bars, go mudding on the area minimum maintenance roads, visit Paul Bunyan and Babe the Blue Ox on the shore of Lake Bemidji, check-out local events for Bagley and Bemidji.
